Invitation – Tongariro National Park, an Artist’s Field Guide

As the opening event for the 2023 Festival Fringe the Whanganui Literary Festival Trust is proud to launch Tongariro National Park: an Artist’s Field Guide by Desmond Bovey.

Desmond was an illustrator and graphic designer in France for 30 years. On his return to live in Whanganui he lent his skills voluntarily to local organisations such as Forest & Bird.

He has a considerable collection of Minkisi African statues and masks which he has curated into exhibitions for the Whanganui Regional Museum, and elsewhere around the country.

Tongariro National Park is a tour de force, recording in exquisite illustrations, which capture the mood and colour of the area, and lively text, the flora and fauna of New Zealand’s first national park. Desmond describes it as his personal response to the landscape, but it is a book which will be enjoyed by many—visitors who enjoy recreation in the park, nature lovers, those who appreciate the finest of drawings and those who love a well-written text.

Published by Potton & Burton, Tongariro National Park will be on sale at the launch, signed by the author/illustrator.

In a nice juxtaposition the Space Gallery is exhibiting Habitat Treasures (see Exhibitions).

To be launched by Hamish McDouall.

Wednesday 20th September 5.30 – 7.30pm.

At the Space Studio and Gallery, 18 St Hill Street, Whanganui.
